Dental bridges are used in restorative dentistry to fill in the empty space left by a missing tooth. Dental bridges work by attaching a false tooth to the teeth adjacent to the empty space, thereby “bridging” the void. They are an excellent option for patients who do not have enough bone structure to support a dental implant.
There are three main types of dental bridges:
- Conventional fixed bridge: This bridge can fix one or multiple teeth. A false tooth is fused to two dental crowns placed in the teeth adjacent to the space.
- Cantilever Bridges: This bridge is ideal for areas of less stress, such as your front teeth. Cantilever bridges are used when there are teeth on only one side of the empty space. A false tooth is anchored one side, over the natural part of your adjacent tooth.
- Resin Bonded Bridges: This bridge is used mainly for your front teeth, when your adjacent teeth are healthy. A false tooth will be fused to metal bands that are bonded to the adjacent teeth with a resin. This reduces the amount of preparation that must be done on the teeth on either side of your gap.
