Give Smiling A Try: The Benefits Are Tremendous

If you’ve read our previous blog, you will see that there are some major health benefits to smiling.  Today, we will touch on some other reasons to smile.

  •  Smiling is contagious.  When you see someone smiling, it stimulates activity in your brain that controls movement of the facial muscles.  It’s much like the yawning reflex.  When you observe someone yawning, you will most likely yawn, even if you aren’t tired.  When you see someone smiling, you will most likely smile back at them.  This releases endorphins and makes you happier.
  • A person that smiles is seen to be more attractive, easy-going and approachable.  People who smile are also thought to be more attractive by others.  Think about it–when you get your picture taken, don’t you say “Cheese” and smile?
  • Do you want to be perceived as trustworthy?  A study at the University of Pittsburgh found that people who smiled were looked at as more trustworthy.  A simple smile could determine if you get that job or promotion.  Along these same lines, smiling may be the key to obtaining leadership roles.
  • Haven’t you been in an uncomfortable situation?  Maybe a job interview or meeting someone for the first time?  Try smiling.  It has been shown that simply smiling in uncomfortable situations makes you more at ease.
  • Putting a smile on your face increases productivity.  Happy and content employees perform better and this also influences coworkers.  Just think how great it would be to work in a place where so many people were smiling and being productive.
  • Need a natural pain reliever?  Smiling releases endorphins that can lift your mood.
  • Want to increase your earning potential?  People who smile generally get more raises, achieve more advancements and make more in tips.  The smile shows that they are capable and confident.  Aren’t you more likely to leave a bigger tip when your waiter or waitress is smiling and friendly?
  • According to the DailyMail https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2632793/How-SMILE-way-promotion-Expert-reveals-expressions-make-look-powerful-honest-flirty.html, 67% of women think that a man’s smile is his most important physical trait.  In that same study, 62% of men felt that a women’s smile is her most important physical trait.
  • Want to live longer and look younger?  Give smiling a try.  Because smiling has shown to reduce stress and help heart health, you can possibly live longer by just smiling more.  Also, people who smile look younger because the facial muscles are lifted.  According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, 96% of adults in the United States think that a nice smile is more attractive to the opposite sex.
