How Do I know If I Need Braces?

Most people don’t need braces to straighten their teeth. However, there are a few cases when traditional braces are the most effective treatment option. These include:

  • Severely rotated teeth
  • Severely tipped teeth
  • Teeth with very large gaps
  • Teeth with severe crowding
  • Severe deep overbite
  • Any case where tooth removal is recommended
  • Cases including skeletal anomalies

In these cases, Invisalign is not an effective treatment option. Sometimes, if one tooth or a few teeth in the front of the mouth need treatment, porcelain veneers can be used, but only if your bite is healthy and will not subject the veneers to excessive force. Severe force can lead to premature failure of porcelain veneers. If porcelain veneers are an option, they have the benefit of being able to reshape misshaped, worn, or damaged teeth.

The only way to know if you have a severe case that requires braces is to talk to a dentist. Your dentist can refer you to an orthodontic specialist who can treat your severe case.
